Terror No.2 'killed by CIA drone'.

AL Qaeda's second-in-command was reported last night to have been killed by a CIA drone in Pakistan.

A US security official said Atiyah Abd al-Rahman was killed in the lawless mountain region of Waziristan.

Libyan-born Al-Rahman was once a teenage protege of Osama Bin Laden.

He is thought to have been recruited into the group when fighting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Al-Rahman, who was in his late 30s, was thought dead until US Navy Seals raided bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad in May and found evidence he was in charge of day-to-day Taliban activities in Afghanistan.

The US official refused to say how he died but there was an attack using the CIA remote-controlled missiles in the Waziristan area when he was killed on Monday.

Last month US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said taking out Al Qaeda chiefs could destroy it after the death of bin Laden.

He said: "I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple Al Qaeda as a major threat."
