Terrier was not attacked.

A BELOVED pet thought to have been injured so badly by cruel thieves that it had to be put down was not actually attacked, police have now revealed.

Murphy, a 13-year-old Yorkshire terrier, who had just one tooth and struggled with arthritis, went missing from his owner's home in Red House, Sunderland, last Thursday. He was found severely injured a 15-minute walk away in Downhill Park the next day.

When Murphy was found in the park it was believed he had been repeatedly kicked by someone who stole him, but following discussions with the vet, it now appears the dog was put down due to complications resulting from old age and had no other injuries.

Vets say Murphy ran away and collapsed before being taken to the vet who put him down.
