Byline: By Sarah Probert

A double rapist who went on the run after jumping bail in the middle of his trial has been jailed for ten years at Birmingham Crown Court.

Police are still searching for Mark Turner who was sentenced in his absence by Judge William Everard yesterday.

Turner (42) of Curbar Road, Great Barr, was convicted of two charges of rape and four of indecent assault following a trial in April when the judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest In passing sentence Judge Everard said there were a number of aggravating features including the age of the victim, who was 11 and 12 at the time of the offences.

He said there had been an element of 'grooming' involved and that the victim's mother, who gave evidence, was questioned on delicate matters which had clearly upset her.

A spokesman from the Crown Prosecution Service said Turner was present for the prosecution and then for part of the defence, going into the witness box and giving his evidence
