Ten injured as violence spreads in Hyderabad.

THE police on Tuesday issued shoot- at- sight orders to handle communal violence in Hyderabad's old city.

The riot- hit area remained by and large peaceful, save for a few stone- pelting incidents.

But communal tension spread to other areas of Hyderabad and 10 people were injured in fresh clashes.

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in the old city since communal hostility flared on Saturday.

On Tuesday morning, a few stone- pelting incidents were reported from the curfewbound areas of Gulzar Houz and Shahali Banda. The police quickly brought the situation under control by resorting to lathicharge.

Hyderabad police commissioner A. K. Khan said the police had been told to shoot any person indulging in violence or arson.

However, tension escalated in the Musheerabad area near Secunderabad when Bajrang Dal activists tried to take out a procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

Stones were pelted at the procession following which the activists clashed with the stone- pelters. Ten people were injured in the clashes.

The police rushed to the area, stalled the procession and took the rioters into custody.

In the evening, the saffron brigade tried to take out a procession at Begumbazar, too.

When the police stopped the procession, they resorted to stone- pelting. The police lobbed tear gas shells and fired in the air to disperse the mob.

Similar incidents were also reported from the Ranigunj, Ramgopalpet, Kavadiguda and Malakpet areas, which have a a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims.

The police forced shops and business establishments to down their shutters in several areas as a precautionary measure.

Khan said special police teams had been formed to identify those fanning the communal fire in the city. " We have arrested 110 people in this connection and are questioning them," he said.
