Ten Year Trends: Rabah is tasty for starters; Local trainer Dunlop should improve his good record in the Gordon Stakes.

RABAH can give local trainer John Dunlop a flying start to the week in the Peugeot Gordon Stakes at Goodwood today.

In the absence of horses who ran in the Derby, there is no particularly strong trend here, but over the years it has been interesting to note how well Predominate Stakes winners have fared.

In the last ten years, both Minster Son and Warrshan completed the double, while St Mawes, also trained by Dunlop, was third in the Derby trial before his Gordon Stakes success.

Dunlop also triumphed back in 1987, so his recent record is as good as any here.

Hitman is worth his step up to Group company but he has no form over this trip, yet only one recent winner, Stylish Senor, had not yet raced over it and his win came in a farcical three-runner affair.

Stylish Senor and Stowaway are also the only winners who had not competed in either Listed or Group company.

The King George Grosvenor Casinos Stakes (3.20) is always run at a furious pace, and in recent years they have gone much too fast and the winners have always come from off the pace (trailblazing Lochsong being a notable exception).

Historically, three-year-olds have fared best but with older horses having taken four of the last five runnings there appears to be a shifting trend.

Only two winners had not at least been placed in Group- race sprints, but only two had previously won in such company that season.

During the Eighties, every winner seemed to have previously contested the King Stand's Stakes at Royal Ascot, but only three in the Nineties went for that contest.

Favouring those older runners who like to come off the pace, the most likely winner is Tedburrow, who has been running well in Listed and Group company all season.

The Chesterfield Cup Handicap (3.50) has favoured in- form handicappers of late with seven of the last ten having won their most recent start. Six winners had also already won in handicap company that term.

With just one winner having carried over 9st 5lb and only one shouldering less than 8st 3lb, those at the extremes of the handicap here can be discounted. Similarly, eight winners have been rated between 81 and 94.

The runner who fits all the above trends is Secret Spring who, like 1996 winner Grand Selection, came back to winning form in the City Industry Handicap at Kempton.
