Teenage kicks; Finding your way on the fashion front isn't always easy when you reach your teens. Francesca Craggs offers some style inspiration.
It's a transitional time in every sense and fashion plays a vital role in many teenagers developing their own identity.
Teen trends for autumn/winter 2009 range from preppy to party girl, with brands such as Ralph Lauren, Juicy Couture at Fenwick, and Therapy by House of Fraser all proving popular. Big teenage trends for girls this season include second skin and distressed denim, statement Ts, military jackets, statement scarves and 1980s-inspired neons.
Polly Noel-Storr, buyer of weekend premium denim and contemporary at Fenwick, Newcastle, said: "It's really important for teenagers to follow adult trends, but interpret them in a more youthful and playful way. Polo jeans is a great example of a brand that follows some of this season's major trends, but it's a little bit younger and quirkier.
"Juicy Couture has really come up trumps this season, with some rock and grunge influences, but it still has that sweetness to it that the brand will always have.
"Accessories are a great way for teenagers to put their own stamp on a style, so it's important to have lots of bags and jewellery to give a more youthful and spirited look."
Getting the right look needn't cost the Earth, says Polly. "Our Boutique range is aimed at younger customers who want a designer look at an affordable price. Customers can pick something up that looks great for around pounds 25. Every teenager should shop in TopShop once a week.
"It offers the widest range of sizes and hot-off-the-catwalk trends."
