Teen told illness was just hormone problem.

Byline: By JONATHAN LESSWARE

A TEENAGER who was given antibiotics after being told her hormones were causing her to feel ill was diagnosed with inoperable cervical cancer six months later. Brave Katy Orme, now 19, was told by a GP that her spot bleeding was hormonal.

She was later given antibiotics after complaining she continued to feel tired and unwell.

Katy was devastated when tests six months later revealed she had cervical cancer.

Doctors broke the shattering news that the cancer was inoperable and recommended she start on a powerful course of chemotherapy in a bid to shrink the tumour.

Her family say the love and support shown by her friends and neighbours is helping her cope.

Mum Hannah Orme, of Fauldhouse, West Lothian, says the community has rallied round to support Katy, whose weight has plummeted to just five stone.

The teenager finds comfort sitting in the garden outside the oncology unit at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

So neighbours are now fundraising to buy a bench to let more patients enjoy the tranquil setting.

Hannah said: ``Katy had been feeling unwell for about six months.

``When we took her to the doctors, they always said it was her hormones.

``Cancer was never considered because she was so young.

``When she was diagnosed, we were absolutely devastated.''

Hannah added: ``It does cheer her up that the community is behind her.''

Figures show cervical cancer cases in women under 19 are extremely rare, with just two in Scotland in 1999.
