Techtextil/Compositex focuses on technical textile innovations.
According to Messe Frankfurt GmbH, organizers of Techtextil, more than 10,000 visitors from 60 countries attended the show, which featured 440 exhibitors from 27 countries. The exhibition also featured a concurrent symposium, which included approximately 90 speakers on myriad textile topics throughout the three days of the show.
New Products Featured

Despite the scheduling conflicts, nonwovens suppliers were well represented at the show and several companies used Techtextil/Compositex as an opportunity to introduce new products to the trade.
One such company was DuPont, Wilmington, DE, which introduced several new products in addition to offering a very innovative "World of Sensations" tent outside the exhibition that provided a sensory experience of various DuPont materials. The primary new product at the DuPont stand was "Recycle Man," a protective apparel garment worn at the show by several models. With the tagline "More than workwear...fully recyclable workwear," Tyvek Recycle Man is 100% recyclable, including the buttons and sewing thread and comes with a full recycling service for the used garments. The garments offer the strength of regular workwear with the flexibility of a disposable garment, while providing a guarantee that the used garment will be recycled.
Also new is Tyvek Recycle Man Plus, which uses the Tyvek flash spinning process then hydroentangles the garment for increased softness, drape and breathability. Both products are available directly from DuPont and target general workwear applications.
Dupont also debuted new "MicroPure" cleanroom wipes manufactured from its "Sontara" spunlaced fabric. The MicroPure wipes have wet and dry strength and are solvent resistant, as well as being packaged in lint-free, easy-to-open peelable packs, also made from DuPont materials.
Finally, "PrintClean" wipes, also made from Sontara, were featured by DuPont. The wipes are easily printable and have application in cleaning print plates and rubber ink cylinders in the printing industry.
A Techtextil Innovation Prize was awarded to C.H. Sandler GmbH, Schwarzenbach, Germany, for a new 100% polyester elastic nonwoven for molded automotive seat components. The thermally bonded material, which is environmentally friendly in production and processing, is a strong, lofty product and provides consistent material properties even under high temperatures. Sandler also introduced "Sawafloor" 5000, a polyester laminate for upholstered seats. The product is to be used as a substitute for polyurethane foam and can be recycled.
Another manufacturer with something new was roll goods supplier Lohmann, Neuwied, Germany, which introduced a needlepunched nonwoven made of an oxidized polyacrylic fiber that does not burn. The new product targets temperature-resistant applications such as insulation in cars. It is also in the development stages with a new "Paramoll" lofty needled fabric to replace foam in car seats and interiors. The company is now testing this material with several automobile companies and hopes to have the product commercialized by the end of the year.
Finally, Lohmann has also introduced a polyester pleatable filter media for industrial gas filtration. It has a PTFE surface coating that helps surface filtration and provides high filtration efficiency and good cake release.
At the stand of Libeltex, Meulebeke, Belgium, a new needled felt for air filtration - particularly HVAC systems - was introduced. Currently in the testing stages, the new product targets a high air filtration grade. Libeltex also featured a fireproof needlefelt that was temperature resistant up to 600 [degrees] C. This has application in public transportation furniture such as seats for trains and buses.
Exhibiting under its new name for the first time at Techtextil/Compositex was Hof Textil & Design, formerly Textilgruppe Hof, Hof, Germany. The company was promoting its materials for automotive component, furniture and artificial leather applications.
At Freudenberg, Weinheim, Germany, the major innovations were updates of new product introductions at the INDEX show. The company continued to promote its 100% biodegradable spunbonded nonwoven introduced at INDEX. Freudenberg reported great interest in the product, markets for which are still to be determined. The company was also promoting a regenerable belt filter for metal working and a microfiber spunbonded nonwoven for ventilation systems in valve bags.
Hoechst AG, Frankfurt, Germany, highlighted its "Trevira" spunbonded nonwovens for roofing, geotextiles and lightweight nonwoven applications. It was also featuring its brand new Trevira bicomponent material for roofing substrates.
Fiberweb, Brugg, Switzerland, reported nothing new at Techtextil, but the company was on hand promoting its "world of nonwovens" theme, featuring products for myriad nonwoven end uses.
Roll goods supplier Fibertex, Aalborg, Denmark, which did not exhibit at INDEX, was present at Techtextil showing its flame retardant products. Sold under the "Fibertex" trade name, the materials target automotives and furniture and bedding applications. Also at the Fibertex stand were oil and water resistant products and absorbent materials for the building industry.
Beier Industries, Durban, South Africa, a needlepunched nonwovens manufacturer, was on hand promoting its line of high end technical textiles. The company manufactures products for the automotive, agricultural, clothing, filtration, soft furnishings and composite industries. Beier also manufactures stitchbonded and thermal bonded nonwovens.
Akzo Industrial Nonwovens, Arnhem, The Netherlands, promoted its full range of nonwovens at Techtextil. Featured prominently at the stand was its "Colback" bicomponent product, which features high strength and thermal and dimensional stability; applications include automotives and filtration.
Filtration was also the focus at the stand of Gutsche, Fulda, Germany, which displayed its "Porotex" filter media. Porotex filters can be made from polyester or polypropylene needled felts as well as special PPS, PTFE and polyimide felts; applications included mining and cement industries, power stations and asphalt mixing plants as well as high temperature applications.
Texidel, Crepy-En-Valois, France, was at the Techtextil exhibition promoting its needlepunched and stitchbonded nonwoven products. The needlepunched products range from 80-500 grams sq. meter and target applications including automotive, banners, packaging, filtration, interlinings and geotextiles. The Malivlies stitchbonded materials target applications such as wound dressings, feminine hygiene, liquid filtration, bedding, interlinings and coating substrates.
Glass nonwoven products were the focus at Schuller Filtration, Wertheim, Germany, which featured "microlith" glass fiber mats and binderfree needled mats for applications in roofing and in floor and wall coverings.
Kanebo, Osaka, Japan, featured its high end wiping cloths made with its "Belima X" microfibers. The "Cemoi" cloths have high wiping efficiency, no generation of dust and good absorbency and chemical resistance.
Machinery, Raw Materials Suppliers
Also Represented At Exhibition
While the bulk of the exhibitors at the show involved with nonwovens focused on roll goods, also represented were manufacturers of raw materials and machinery for nonwoven applications. Among the raw material suppliers, Lenzing Fibers, Lenzing, Austria, displayed its range of flame retardant and viscose fibers for nonwoven applications. The company also highlighted its environmental focus and ongoing developments in that area.
A complete range of technical fibers for nonwovens was featured by Vitafibres, Rochdale, U.K. The company targets the medical, apparel and building industries with its line of fibers.
Kemira Oy, Valkeakoski, Finland, also promoted fibers for nonwovens, particularly its "Visil" flame retardant fiber. Visil contains only cellulose and silica, the latter acting as a barrier to heat and smoke in textile and nonwoven applications.
Wellman International, Kells, Republic of Ireland, was present at Techtextil promoting its company in general and its bicomponent fibers in particular. The company's "Well-bond" bicomponents have application in various highloft and traditional nonwoven applications.
Cotton supplier Edward Hall, Whaley Bridge, U.K., featured its line of cotton fibers for nonwovens. The company concentrated more specifically on the technical and industrial nonwoven product applications that benefit from the use of cotton.
Conwed Plastics, Heverlee, Belgium, highlighted its range of diaper adhesive nets. The nets, which bond all types of materials, are currently targeting new composite areas and can be used in thermal bonded, adhesive bonded, hydroentangled and needlepunched nonwovens.
On the machinery side at the show, several nonwovens machinery manufacturers were at Techtextil promoting their various equipment lines for nonwovens production. The NSC Group, which is comprised of Asselin, Schlumberger and Thibeau, was talking about its complete range of carding, crosslapping and needlepunching machines for nonwovens.
Needlepunching was also the focus at the stand of Oskar Dilo Maschinenfabrik, Eberbach, Germany, which featured information on its complete range of needlepunching machinery as well as material on its specialty machinery and accessory equipment.
Likewise, Dr. Ernst Fehrer, Linz, Austria, featured nonwoven materials made on various Fehrer machines. The display included nonwovens produced on its NL 11/SE and NL 21 S/RV needle looms, as well as spunlaced and random webs made on the K12 random card and thermal bonded waddings manufactured on the V21/KI2 highloft machine.
At the stand of Kusters, Krefeld, Germany, the "Hot S Roll" thermal bonding calender was highlighted. The calenders, which include as their central element heated or non-heated deflection controlled swimming rolls (S-rolls), target thermal bonded nonwoven applications. Kusters featured three specific types of S-rolls at the Techtextil exhibition.
Groz-Beckert, Ebingen, Germany, used Techtextil to promote its range of needles for the nonwoven and textile industries. The company displayed a brochure highlighting its felting needles for needled felts and filtration applications as well as its range of knitted and textile-related needles.
Machtex Holland bv, Amsterdam, Holland, exhibited information on its adhesive laminating machines. The systems, for both solvent and dispersion adhesives, laminate a variety of materials ranging from microporous films and automotive trim to insulation material for refrigerated trucks and lampshade materials.
Also promoting coating and laminating was Villars Maschinenbau, Muenchwilen, Switzerland. The company's primary products are powder scatter and powder dot processing systems as well as hot melt application systems for melt printing and hot melt screen printing. Villars exhibited its new Type 91 scatter coating machine for technical applications such as conveyor belts, floor coverings and automotive applications.
Second Techtextil Asia Scheduled
Announced the Techtextil/Compositex show in Germany was the scheduling of the second Techtextil Asia show, which this time will also be called Techtextil/Compositex Asia, reflecting the emphasis on composite materials. The Asian show, which will take place October 5-7, 1994 at the Intex Osaka fairground, Osaka, Japan, is organized as a joint venture between Messe Frankfurt GmbH, organizers of the German version of the show and the Osaka International Trade Fair Commission, organizers of Otemas, one of the largest textile machinery shows in the world.
The Techtextil/Compositex Asia exhibition, like its German counterpart, will focus on technical textiles in the Asian market and it is also accompanied by a symposium. At the first Techtextil Asia show, held in 1992, there were 112 exhibiting companies and more than 10,000 visitors.
