Pure, Purer, Purest Water for the Lab

The ever-increasing sensitivity of laboratory instruments from HPLC and GC to AA, MS and ICP spectroscopy, demands that the water used for sample preparation, as well as labware cleaning be contaminant-free. For all research, the goal is to have water with no interfering substances such as organics, inorganics, pyrogens, bacteria, particles and nuclease. While the life science sector is the fastest growing market for water purification equipment, there is great demand for ultrapure water in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and electronics fields, in addition to the traditional analytical research areas. New systems now can detect any water contamination and can also provide validation of water quality.

Millipore supplies to scientists Milli-Q Water Systems based on technology that has been producing ultrapure water since 1973. Millipore's water purification systems focus on specific points that clearly differentiate them.

For Water Quality, there are five different types of Milli-Q Systems. Each type produces ultapure water corresponding to specific customer needs. The Milli-Q Gradient System is designed to remove traces of organic contaminants from ultrapure water, while the Milli-Q Biocel System produces water for cell culture applications. The Academic System is designed for general laboratory applications and the Synthesis System is suitable for PCR, 2-D electrophoresis, and critical cell culture (defined media). The Milli-Q Element System produces ultrapure water for ultratrace analysis.

For Water Quality Monitoring, Milli-Q Systems are equipped with high quality resistivity meters designed to detect ionic contamination at sub ppb levels. In addition, Milli-Q Systems have a built-in, calibrated TOC monitor which allows the detection of dissolved organic substances at the ppb level.

For Compliance to GLP, Milli-Q Ultrapure Water Systems have been designed for easy and complete validation. The Milli-Q System includes a built-in RS232 output allowing printouts of water quality. The system also alerts the user when maintenance is required, when the system stops operating within specification, or when the system needs repair.

Millipore Ultrapure Water Systems are used in the private and public research laboratories, as well as in the quality control laboratories of leading pharmaceutical, biotechnology, environmental monitoring and electronic companies.

Recent enhancements have dramatically improved the sensitivity of modern analytical instruments. Trace elements are now measured at ppt and sub-ppt levels by techniques such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). These levels can be achieved only if careful control of the analytical protocol is maintained. At these detection levels, any reagent or environmental contamination is likely to increase the element concentration measured in the analyzed samples.

Contamination can come from any contact with the sample, including glassware or plasticware, the laboratory environment, the air, the operator, or any aspect of sample preparation, including the water needed for blanks, calibration solutions preparation and plasticware washing.

Millipore scientists operating regularly in the field of ICP-MS have specifically designed Millipore's new Milli-Q Element Water System for the production and control of ultrapure water with sub-ppt ionic contamination.

Labconco manufactures the WaterPro RO Station and PS Polishing Stations for the production of (18 megohm), Type I water. This high purity level water is commonly used in critical HPLC, Atomic Absorption, Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatographic analyses.

The WaterPro RO Station produces semi-pure water and dispenses up to 17 liters in two minutes from the integral 17-liter storage tank. The larger RO storage capacity and high volume production rate meet pure water requirements of multiple instruments.

Once the tank is empty, the RO Station dispenses water at a rate of one liter per minute (at 25 C). Other new features include a sleek 304 stainless steel front panel for improved corrosion resistance, user friendly control panel, and our timed dispense feature that allows for unattended filling of large storage vessels. Laboratory technicians appreciate the time dispense feature because it means no more overfills and no more mopping the lab floor of spills.

The WaterPro PS Polishing Station has a new touchpad control panel that displays water quality (megohm-cm), temperature (degrees C), and adjustable water quality resistivity alarm set point (megohm-cm). The control panel also operates the new timed dispensing function that allows up to 99 minutes of unattended dispensing with automated shutoff.

The filter housings are made from unpigmented natural polypropylene maintaining TOC levels below 5 ppb. The Life Science, HPLC, and Hybrid Polishing Station models have a new dual wavelength (9185 nm and 254 nm) UV light module ensuring both low TOC and bacteria values. The Life Sciences and Hybrid models also include a new built-in ultrafilter module, freeing the fourth filter housing for an additional deionization cartridge, giving the customer even more total pure water production capacity between filter changes. Whether the requirement is for analytical water for inorganic or organic applications, bacterial or pyrogen free water for biological applications or nuclease free water for Life Science requirements, Barnstead has the right system.

The newest and fastest growing market segment for laboratory water purification is the Life Science or Biotechnology market. Specifically, our customers are requesting water that can be used for DNA amplification without the use of DEPC. The presence of nucleases such RNase and DNase as well as DNA itself in the water used as a reagent in the PCR reaction will make achieving successful results impossible. Until recently the only method of achieving nuclease free water was with the use of DEPC (Diethyl pyrocarbonate), a chemical that will inactivate RNase. Using DEPC is expensive, time consuming, toxic and will change the chemistry of the water. Barnstead, with the proper use of carbon adsorption, strong base anion exchange, UV oxidation and ultrafiltration, has demonstrated nucleases such as RNase can be effectively removed from water without the use of DEPC. An independent study was completed demonstrating that the Barnstead EASYpure and NANOpure Type 1 Ultrapure Water Systems are capable of removing nucleases such as RNase from a challenged water source.
