Technical Coffee Conference in Paipa, Colombia

The 13th ASI Conference and Trade Fair took place in Paipa, Colombia, August 20-26, and was attended by almost 400 participants from 50 countries.

The event was co-sponsored by the Coffee Growers Federation of Colombia and the International Association on Coffee Science, ASIC, headquartered in Paris (42 rue Scheffer). The expected participation of the sponsorship on the part of the International Coffee Organization did not finally materialize, possibly due to the latest developments in the ICA.

Besides the interesting lectures on purely scientific and technical subjects, such as agronomy and biology, there were some very useful presentations on coffee chemistry and industrial processing of coffee products, as well as other related subjects.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the Coffee Technical International Exhibition which ran parallel to the Convention and which gathered about 20 participants in the field of high technology equipment for laboratory analysis, quality control, testing, processing plants and industrial processes. Besides demonstrations of the equipment at the booths, including some state-of-the-art near infra red spectrophotometry, oral presentations were made in a special conference room. The Exhibition brought together manufacturers of roasting and storage equipment and systems, electronic sorting machines, fertilizer processors, decaffeination plant and instant coffee equipment manufacturers.

ASIC Conferences and Trade Fairs are held every two years, alternating between a producer and a consuming country. The author learned at the closing of the Paipa meeting that the next Conference (to be announced) will take place in the summer of 1991 in the U.S., and most probably in the North-eastern region. ASIC brings together consumers and producers, research organizations, processors, industrialists, equipment manufacturers, consultants, and many other groups interested in the scientific and technical aspects of coffee as well as processing and related fields.

All roasters and processors, who transform the coffee beans into consumer products should have a special interest to join and support such an organization as ASIC. As a non-profit entity it is dedicated to advancing a better understanding of the product and the changes it undergoes from planting to brewing. As an international group it helps to promote a better understanding and flow of information and technology between a diverse and sophisticated growing international membership.

After the Paipa Conference, many of the participants took advantage of the scheduled side trips to coffee growing areas and to the Amazon region of Colombia. The meeting site itself is in the mountains at an altitude of almost 10,000 feet above sea level, so the produce of the area is limited to potatoes, wheat, barley, and other temperate climate crops.

In closing, I would like to note that notwithstanding the difficult and sad times surrounding the Paipa Conference, due to present conditions of the host country, the meeting went without any disturbance or incident in every respect and was an unforgettable event for the coffee world.
