Taylor enjoys a great night out.

STEVEN TAYLOR hailed Newcastle United's win over Anzhi Makhachkala as one of the "great European nights" at St James' Park.

The Whitley Bay lad shrugged off the disappointment of missing out on the England squad to put in one of his best performances in a United jersey.

It means United will take their tally of European appearances to 134 after booking a place in the last eight of the Europa League.

When asked if it was one of his best nights as a Toon star, he told the Chronicle: "I think it was, I had a lot to do and it was a big task.

"Everybody was talking about Samuel Eto'o before the game and you know you are playing against one of the best strikers of all time really.

"His record speaks for itself.

"There was a lot of pressure on me before the game.

"I'm just glad we put in a great performance as a team. We defended so well.

"In the first half we got the runaround a little bit.

"The second half, we put them under so much pressure they could not handle it."

"I was in the right place at the right time.

"I got the blocks in early doors but the main thing is they did not score - so it was worth it."

Taylor was left out of the squad for the two World Cup qualifiers this month for Roy Hodgson's squad despite being in contention.

However, he said: "You expect somebody like Rio Ferdinand to get in.

"The quality in there is unbelievable. I am " Taylor put in a series of incredible blocks and crucial interventions against the Russians- - at one stage heading a ball clear while lying on the floor in a manner Bryan Robson would have been proud off. probably still some way offHe reflected: "I thought I was going to lose my teeth at one point. but I will keep plugging away and doing well for Newcastle." Taylor did not care who United plucked out for the next round of the competition. He added: "The lads are absolutely buzzing and we do not fear anybody. "The gaffer said we had knocked out the best team in the competition. "They have outstanding players."
