Tatchell accuses Winning over gay assaults.

GAY activist Peter Tatchell yesterday claimed Keep the Clause campaigners had "queer blood on their hands".

Tatchell hit out at Cardinal Thomas Winning and Stagecoach tycoon Brian Souter after a report showed gay men were four times more likely to be attacked than heterosexuals.

Tatchell claimed: "Cardinal Winning and Brian Souter have stirred up a hateful atmosphere which is almost certain to lead to an increase in queer-bashing. "

Meanwhile, he admitted he wanted to see the age of consent lowered to 14, while believing those who sexually exploited young people should be punished severely.

He said: "If two 14 or 15- year-olds have a consenting relationship, I don't think they should be prosecuted.

"The best response is to give counselling to encourage responsible sexual choices. "

A spokesman for Cardinal Winning said last night: "Peter Tatchell's comments are quite ludicrous. His extreme agenda of gay rights, which includes lowering the age of consent to 14, will find almost no support among the vast majority of Scots."

He added the Church deplored those who attacked people on the grounds of their sexuality.

A spokesman for Keep the Clause said it was "outrageous" to link their activities, which began three weeks ago, to the assault research, which started in 1998.

Meanwhile, the Glasgow Gay and Lesbian Centre came under fire for a leaflet blaming "institutionalised homophobia" such as Section 28 for producing gay serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Dennis Nilsen.
