Tarby flies off course.

A PASSENGER jet was diverted 500 miles today to pick up golf clubs for Jimmy Tarbuck's golf classic in Portugal.

Holidaymakers were left fuming over the mixup.

The Liverpool-born comic hosts the annual tournament, due to start today, on the Algarve.

A total of 63 sets of clubs, owned by golf pros and celebrities, were due to be flown out to Portugal for the event by airline Air 2000.

But they could not be taken on their scheduled flight as they were too heavy.

Attempts at making alternative arrangements fell through, so the airline decided to divert a Gatwick to Faro flight to Manchester to pick up the clubs.

Passengers on the flight were not pleased - and there have been claims that one irate traveller was ordered off the plane after arguing with staff about the delay.

A spokeswoman for Air 2000 said:

"All we can do is apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused. We needed to get the lcubs out to Portugal for the event, and did our best to make different arrangements."
