Tap check on fluoride.

Byline: By SENAN HOGAN

A NATIONAL study is to check new fluoride levels in tap water.

Fluoride is added to prevent dental decay, but levels have been cut back since the beginning of the month after advice from experts.

They have now been reduced from 1mgs per litre to between 0.6 and 0.8mgs per litre.

The Irish Expert Body on Fluorides and Health asked for the reduction because of a slight increase in dental fluorosis.

The group will now monitor levels of the substance in public water supplies across the state.

Legislation to amend fluoridation regulations was passed in the Oireachtas in February.
