Tap bills to cut waste.

DOMESTIC water charges must be introduced to cut down on the high level of waste, engineers warned yesterday.

The Engineers of Ireland said the move would help meet the cost of providing water services over the next 20 years.

Charges would also reduce some of the waste which has seen Ireland shoot to the top of the EU consumption league.

Spokesman Paddy Purcell said: "Daily consumption here is 160 litres per customer, compared to 135 litres in England and Wales and 115 litres in other EU countries."
