MEHTHARLAM (PAN): Insurgent Taliban gunned down Qargha district police chief along with another cop in the eastern Laghman province last night, officials said.

Qargha district chief Mohammad Arif told Pajhwok Afghan News that the police chief Abdul Aziz was on his way back from Nangarhar province when ambushed by Taliban fighters in Dosarki area of Sarkhakan.

He said Abdul Aziz along with another cop was killed and their vehicle destroyed in the attack.

He said soon after the incident emergency security contingent was rushed to the site and in the ensuing battle with Taliban a soldier was also killed.

However he had no information about Taliban's casualties.

Mufti Umar Khitab, introducing himself as regional commander of Taliban told this news agency from an undisclosed location that a large number of police along with the district chief were killed in the ambush.

He said that one Talib fighter was also killed in the fighting.

About a fortnight back a military vehicle had also come under Taliban attack in the same region wherein Taliban had claimed huge casualties to soldiers but army had rejected that claim.
