Jozi, Joburg, Johannesburg--however it's known, the South African city speaks stories of a turbulent past, a tense present, and a future that no one can predict. Schadeberg is a photographer who migrated there from Berlin in 1950. This book showcases his images of the city and its people, presented alongside brief essays and poems by various contributors. The net effect is a portrait of the city--exposed, vulnerable, and precarious--its future, a balancing act built on frank confrontation with uncomfortable realities. This book was published in 2007, but is only now available in the US. Distribution in the US is by International Publishers Marketing. Slightly oversize: 11x11".
