Talented Linehan can land hat-trick on Phantasy.
APPRENTICE Eddie Linehan can underline his good value for his 7lb claim when partnering Phantasy Rock for his boss Willie Mullins in the 50-85 1m2f handicap at Clonmel today.
Linehan, who rode the Ballylinch Stud-owned Rock Of Gibraltar filly to successive wins at Killarney and Wexford during the second half of last month, is highly rated by Mullins and shows every sign of developing into one of the leading youngsters on an apprentice scene that's already rich in talent.
He has established a particularly good relationship with the well-related Phantasy Rock, who has taken a bit of time to mature, but now appears a notably progressive sort who can continue to thrive on the prevailing fast ground.
She has a relatively light weight now that she steps up in grade in a race where the David Wachman-trained Speechmaker probably represents the main threat.
Speechmaker won an auction maiden at Roscommon in June and it's worth bearing in mind that he finished in front of Green And Gold, who was subsequently Phantasy Rock's immediate victim at Wexford, when fifth to Stranfield Lady on his handicap debut at Leopardstown last month.
The handicap hurdle on today's card has attracted only a few horses with any strong pretensions for winning any type of race, and the one that catches the eye is the Henry de Bromhead-trained mare Chartani, who is given a chance to capitalise on a modest hurdles rating after finishing fourth behind her shorter-priced stablemate Carleton Place when amateur-ridden in a handicap chase at Tramore last month.
Andrew Lynch is aboard today, and Chartani's handicap mark is appealing relative to the rating at which she was successful over fences at Tramore last year. Pick of the opposition is Foreigner, who was having his first outing for more than two years when second to Almanyan at Downpatrick last month.
Lines of form involving third-placed City Hustler make convincing reading at this level, but it remains to be seen whether he can build on that first run for his new trainer Tara Cogan.
Today's bets Phantasy Rock 6.10 Clonmel 1pt win Chartani 7.10 Clonmel 1pt win
