Taking people power away; Your Say.

THE Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government announced the Government's intention in principle to abolish the Government Office for the West Midlands, based in Birmingham and employing 170 local people.

He accused the staff of being agents of Whitehall who are a fundamental part of the command and control apparatus of England's over-centralised state.

He made this statement without talking to staff in Birmingham about what they do and how they have consistently worked with partners and the people of the West Midlands.

In reality, he will take work back to his desk in London and further centralise decisions, taking power away from local people. Those same staff have been asked to coordinate the Pope's visit to ensure it is the success I am sure it will be. Someone has to do this work.

PCS says it's best done by the people who know the turf the staff based in Birmingham in the Government Office.
