Takeover stake in traffic gen system.
The move means the firm will join big hitters such as the RAC and AA in a government consortium to develop a nationwide traffic information network for drivers.
ITIS has bought Communi-cation & Measurement Tech-nologies - a leader in the field of radio data system and traffic message channel (RDS-TMC) information systems. It was a key member of the consortium, which also involves the Department of Transport and the Highways Agency, working on sending data through the airwaves via the new technology.
ITIS, based in Queens Road, will now take over C&MT's role in the consortium.
RDS-TMC technology has the potential to deliver detailed, up-to-the-minute traffic information via an FM signal on car radios and in-car navigation systems.
The consortium's work will help establish the commercial viability of the scheme.
TMC data can be translated into speech or can provide a real-time traffic input to the vehicle satellite navigation system.
Stuart Marks, chairman of ITIS, said: "C&MT's pioneering work in the development of RDS technology for this application fits well with our approach to the rapid delivery of traffic information and will further enhance our ability to convey the very latest information via the medium of radio."
