Talking about trade union disputes, did you hear about the owner of the crisp factory who decided to modernise?

During the manufacturing process, fresh made crisps were transported to the packing room in metal bins that were specially made on site.

For 80 years, sheet metal had been supplied by a local firm and the bins were hand crafted with soldered seams.

Not any more, said the owner.

To cut costs, he bought plastic bins and gave the metal workers redundancy notices.

This was not popular and the entire workforce came out on strike and staged a rally from the Town Hall to the factory.

And as they marched they sang: Onward Crisp Bin Solderers ...
