Take a healthy interest.

A recruitment drive has been launched for people to study health research projects.

County Durham and Tees Valley Strategic Health Authority wants people to join one of three Local Research Ethics Committees.

They will look at plans to carry out local health research schemes, studying patient information, dignity and confidentiality.

Joan Kirkbride, local manager for the Central Office of Research Ethics Committees said: "One of the main roles of a lay member is to ensure that the information given to research participants is simple to understand.

"Their role is therefore to safeguard the patients' interests and to ensure that inappropriate research does not take place."

Committees covering North Tees and Hartlepool, South Tees and County Durham and Darlington will each need six lay people who are not health professionals or employed in research posts undertaking clinical trials.

Mrs Kirkbride said people from a range of backgrounds and interests, were needed.
