TAIPEI, March 4 Kyodo

Taiwan's key stock index soared 3.41% Monday on the back of strong gains in U.S. markets and increased trading volume.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index (TAIEX), which opened sharply higher, held its gains throughout the four-and-a-half-hour trading session, temporarily breaking through the 5,900 mark.

The index closed at 5,874.48, up 193.7 points, or 3.41%, from Friday's close. The key index moved between 5,923.21 and 5,834.26.

The electronics sub-index outperformed the TAIEX, gaining 4.2%, as many semiconductor and DRAM shares went limit up, mirroring gains in the technology-laden Nasdaq composite index in New York.

Turnover rose to NT$131.09 billion from Friday's final tally of NT$113.96 billion. A total of 4,183,285 lots of 1,000 shares were traded compared to Friday's 3,681,775 lots.
