Taiwan Province of China : Project to upgrade airport in Taichung launched.

A project to upgrade Taichung Airport to an international airport was launched yesterday, with the goal of capitalizing on demand for flights across the Taiwan Strait, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications said.

The ministry said that in light of fast rising demand for international charters and direct cross-strait flights, the facilities at the airport have become inadequate.

The first stage of the project, scheduled to be completed in late 2012, will be to improve the existing taxiways and to build a maintenance hangar, a sewage disposal plant and a new international terminal, at a cost of NT$3.89 billion (US$121.18 million).

Upon completion, the existing terminal would be able to serve 1 million passengers a year, while the new terminal would have an annual capacity of 1.35 million, said the ministry, adding that if the existing terminal is expanded in later stages, it would be able to serve another 1 million passengers annually.
