Taffy twirls.

A unique cast-on technique gives the edges a special flair, making this piece a wonderful present for a little girl in your life. Have fun learning a creative new cast on, and she'll have fun wearing this colorful skirt.

Skill level: Intermediate ***

Sizes: Child's 6 months (1 year, 2 years)

Finished measurements:

Waist: To fit 16(17, 18)"

Length: 7 (8%, 10)"

Note: Waist size is adjusted with a drawstring; all sizes use same number of stitches.

Yarn used: Cotton Fleece by Brown Sheep

MATERIALS

* 1 skein Cotton Fleece by Brown Sheep, 80% cotton, 20% merino wool (215 yds/1 OOg) in each of colors CW-850 Berry (A), CW-810 Cherry Moon (B), CW-210Tea Rose (C) and CW-240 Pink-a-boo (D)

* Two U.S. size 8 (5mm) 20" circular needles and set of 2 DPNs, or size required for gauge

* Stitch markers

* Yarn needle

18 sts and 24 rows = 4" (10cm) in St st

Notes

Skirt begins with lower ruffle. Each following ruffle is joined to the previous.

Any of the three cast-on edges from the Stitch Dictionary on page 10 can be used. Number of stitches for each cast on is given. If working fringe edge, keep fringe fairly short, about 1" long.

SKIRT

Ruffle 1

With circular needle and A, cast on 200 sts if using the twisted edge cast on, 199 sts for the eyelet edge cast on, or 200 sts for the fringe edge cast on. After working the edging, pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts. Work even in St st until ruffle measures 1 3/4 (2, 2 1/2)" Set aside.

Ruffle 2

With B, work edging same as for ruffle 1, stopping after working the cast-on edge but before joining. Lay this ruffle on top of previous ruffle, both RS up.

Joining rnd: Knit together 1 stitch from each ruffle; 200 (199, 200) sts are now joined in the rnd.

Dec rnd: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around, ending kD (4, 0); 160 sts for all sizes.

Work even in St st until entire skirt measures Vh (414, 5)" from bottom. Set aside.

Ruffle 3

With C, work same as for ruffle 2 but with 160 (161, 160) sts. Join in the same way, knitting last 2 sts tog for eyelet edge ruffle option; 160 sts for all sizes.

Dec rnd: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around; 128 sts for all sizes.

Work even in St st until entire skirt measures 5% (6%, 7%)" from bottom. Set aside.

Ruffle 4

With D, work same as for ruffle 2 but with 128 (129, 128) sts. Join in the same way, knitting last 2 sts tog for eyelet edge ruffle option; 128 sts for all sizes.

Dec rnd: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around; 96 sts for all sizes.

Work even in St st until entire skirt measures 7 {8V2, 10)" from bottom.

Waistband

Rnd 1: Purl.

Rnd 2: *Yo twice, k2tog; rep from * around.

Rnd 3: Knit, dropping extra yarn overs; 128 sts.

Rnd 4: Purl.

Bind off.

FINISHING

Drawstring

With DPNs and D, cast on 3 sts. *Do not turn work. Slide sts back to right end of needle. Knit across. Rep from * until I-cord measures 3D" or desired length. Bind off.

Weave cord in and out through eyelets of waistband.

Weave in ends. Block skirt so ruffles lay flat.

Tips & Tricks

Mix up the cast-on styles on page 10, using a different cast on for each ruffle for an extra cute finish.
