Tactless Hodgson way off the Mark.

ROY HODGSON rarely strikes the wrong chord in public. He did this week.

His response to a question about Mark Noble's exclusion from his latest England squad was ill-advised. Saying that the West Ham midfielder is flavour of the month now just as Grant Holt (below) was before the last European Championship was poor.

First, it was a disrespectful to a player who has given his all for his local club since he was a teenager. Noble refuses to let his international dream die - and judging by the way he is playing this season, that's a perfectly realistic ambition.

Second, it was disrespectful to Grant Holt, a former tyre-fitter who grabbed his chance with both hands, hoisting himself up from the amateur ranks to play in the Premier League.

Hodgson is asked a lot of questions. But he really should have handled that one better.
