TWO-WAY DID INTERFACE AVAILABLE FROM NICOLLET TECHNOLOGIES

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Nicollet Technologies Inc. has introduced a version of its popular DigiTrap(TM) system that is compatible with two-way DID circuits that are now being offered by several of the Bell operating companies. The new DigiTrap model EM2-1015 converts two-way DID trunks to standard phone lines for use by Voice Mail, Fax-on-Demand and other Enhanced Telephone Services.
Also available from some RBOCs is a service called DID 2-way Call Transfer, which allows (inbound) DID calls to be transferred to another phone number. This capability, commonly associated only with Centrex service, allows a dealer locator system to route callers directly to participating retail merchants, or an answering service to put the caller directly in touch with a subscriber who is away from the office, without tying up a second telephone line.
From a technical point of view, the DigiTrap EM2-1015 converts a 2-wire E&M trunk to a standard, tip~ring phone line, while capturing DID digits from the phone company and passing them to the customer's voice processing system, host computer or phone equipment. Outbound calls proceed in the reverse sequence, allowing the customer's system to dial out over the same lines that receive incoming DID calls.
This new functionality has not been available with DID trunks until very recently, and is not yet offered in every area of the country.
In the past, Direct Inward Dial (DID) trunks were, by definition, capable of handling only inbound telephone calls. Using a special signalling protocol, the phone company would pass the last few digits of the number dialed directly to the customer's PABX, thereby identifying which phone to ring. This reduced the burden on the switchboard operator, since each employee could be given a unique, 7-digit phone number.
Enhanced Service Providers have extended the original DID concept to allow them to assign unique "mailbox" numbers to their subscribers, so that callers could leave messages by simply dialing this 7-digit phone number. The new 2-way DID and DID 2-way Call Transfer services continue to pass digits to the customer's phone system on all incoming calls, but add outbound or transfer capabilities that simplify many applications and expand the opportunites for enhanced services.
DigiTrap systems start at under $2,500 for a complete 4-line system that is expandable to 24 lines in a single cabinet. Nicollet Technologies is the country's leading manufacturer of DID interface systems, allowing a wide variety of call processing systems to take advantage of DID circuits.
