TWO PATENTS ISSUED TO KEITHLEY INSTRUMENTS, TWO MORE ALLOWED
CLEVELAND, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Keithley Instruments, Inc. (AMEX: KEI) has been granted two patents by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Patent and Trademark Office on designs used in its sensitive measurement instruments. Two more patents have been allowed and are expected to be issued within the next few months. Each patent will give Keithley Instruments the exclusive right to manufacture and sell circuitry based on these designs for a period of 17 years.
Patent Number 5,103,389 was issued to Keithley for its Model 2001 Digital Multimeter (DMM), a high-resolution, multi-functional electronic measurement instrument. The patent covers a technique that allows a greater than ten-fold expansion in the frequency range of the instrument's analog TRMS (True Root Mean Square) converter. A second patent has been allowed by the Patent Office on the Model 2001 for the design of a high voltage solid-state protection circuit with circuit limiting. This design offers users significant advantages when dealing with measurement problems such as low-level electrical noise, thermal offsets and drifts, while improving the instrument's switching speed and reliability.
Keithley received Patent Number 5,039,934 for a circuitry design capable of acting as a current-limited voltage source or a voltage- limited current source. This design is employed through Keithley's line of Source-Measure Units (SMUs), test and measurement instruments used to source and measure voltage or current simultaneously. There are currently three SMUs in Keithley's line: the Model 236 Source-Measure Unit, the Model 237 High Voltage Source-Measure Unit, and the Model 238 High Current Source-Measure Unit. In essence, a Source-Measure Unit acts as a voltage source with limits on current, or as a current source with limits on voltage. The Keithley design overcomes several problems common to this type of control circuitry. Prior to the development of the Keithley design, the voltage or current sourcing functions could not be programmed to zero, a feature that is helpful when making precise measurements.
A second patent on the Model 236/237/238 SMUs has also been allowed, and should be issued later this year. This patent covers a circuitry design that allows the user to switch the instrument smoothly from one sourcing or measurement range to another at precisely controlled switching speeds.
Keithley Instruments, Inc. is a leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic test and measurement instrumentation and data acquisition and analysis hardware and software. Its products and systems are found throughout the world in universities, industrial research laboratories, engineering development departments, quality control areas and on production lines. Keithley's Common Shares are listed on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol KEI.
