TWO OF CHICAGO'S LEADING PAPER DISTRIBUTORS MERGE TO FORM LASALLE WHITAKER

VALLEY FORGE, Pa., Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Paper Corporation of America (PCA) announced today that it would merge the operations of its two Chicago-based printing paper distribution companies: LaSalle Messinger Paper and Whitaker, Carpenter, Marquette.
The combined organization, to be known as LaSalle Whitaker, will have annual sales of $250 million making it the largest independent distributor of printing papers in the Chicago area.
Both companies are well established in North America's most important graphic arts market. LaSalle, which traces its roots to 1869, merged with Messinger Paper in 1964 and was acquired by PCA five years later. Whitaker, which was founded at the turn of the century, was acquired by Abitibi-Price, a Canadian paper distribution company, and later merged with Carpenter and Marquette. PCA purchased the Abitibi- Price paper distribution companies earlier this year.
In making the announcement, Raymond A. Peterson, president of Paper Corporation of America, said, "LaSalle Whitaker is a merger of equals. Both of these fine companies have a valued base of customers and suppliers. We intend to preserve and build on those relationships. The combined resources of the new organization -- including a top-flight management team -- will enable us to do an even better job of meeting customer needs and provide a broader array of product lines and value- added services."
Ronald A. Fiehrer, president of LaSalle Messinger, has been named to head the new organization. Commenting on the merger Fiehrer noted, "We intend to consolidate our operations as quickly and as smoothly as possible. As part of the transition, we will create an employee team that combines the best talents of the two companies. With a staff of nearly 250 people, a sales force of 60, and an inventory drawn from the leading mills in North America, LaSalle Whitaker is the premier paper distributor in Chicago."
Paper Corporation of America, an Alco Standard company headquartered in Valley Forge, is North America's largest independent paper distributor with annual sales of $3.7 billion.
Alco Standard Corporation (NYSE: ASN), also headquartered in Valley Forge, is a publicly held paper and office products distribution company. For its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1992, revenues were $4.9 billion.
