TWO LOCAL TEACHERS HEADED FOR SPACE CAMP
 WITH UNDERWRITING BY ROCKWELL AUTOMOTIVE
TROY, Mich., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Two local area teachers, under the sponsorship of the Rockwell International Corporation Trust, will spend a week at the U.S. Space Academy in Huntsville, Ala., learning about space and science for classroom application through a hands-on education program.
Susan C. Babb, a schoolwide enrichment program coordinator in the Birmingham, Mich., elementary school system, and Lori Rekucki, who teaches fourth-grade students at Bemis Elementary in Troy, will attend the Space Academy during the week of July 27 as part of Rockwell's program to support International Space Year (ISY). ISY is the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage.
Babb and Rekucki are part of a group of 23 teachers from around the United States participating in the program sponsored by the Rockwell Trust. They were selected based on their ability to translate their week's experiences into valuable educational programs for students. Their respective school districts are involved with continuing educational partnership programs with Rockwell Automotive.
The Space Academy Program, called "Space Orientation: A Hands-On Approach for Educators," will include basic astronaut training, lectures by NASA staff and astronauts, propulsion instruction, and two simulated Space Shuttle missions. The teachers also will receive a log book of hands-on, classroom applications and resources to use with their students.
Rockwell Automotive President Ronald L. Roudebush cited the company's purpose in underwriting the teachers' attendance in Space Camp, stating, "We're sending these two teachers to Space Camp to help them motivate young people to pursue education in mathematics and the sciences. This effort is part of a range of ISY and other activities that supports Rockwell's continuing programs designed to help improve math and science education in U.S. schools."
Babb coordinates a "Things That Fly" theme in Beverly and Midvale elementary schools which covers everything from butterflies to rockets. "My experience at Space Camp will directly benefit me in teaching math and science principles under this theme to students during the 1992-93 school year," she said.
Rekucki's interest in space flight goes back to the early days of the U.S. space program. "I was exhilarated when I watched John Glenn, and the opportunity to attend the Space Academy is a dream fulfilled," she said. "I eagerly await the chance to share my experiences with fellow educators and students, alike."
Rockwell is supporting additional ISY activities, including a nationwide interactive teleconference that will be conducted this fall by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education. During the teleconference, experts in space exploration will lend advice to students who have participated in efforts this year to create Martian habitats as part of Challenger Center's "Marsville: A Cosmic Village" education project.
