TWO FAMILIES INDUCTED INTO MARYLAND'S AGRICULTURE HALL OF FAME
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. William Donald Schaefer inducted two families into the Governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame of Maryland at the annual Maryland Agricultural Dinner in Baltimore Feb. 6.
The two families were the Overholt family of Somerset County and the Walter family of Charles County.
Schaefer organized the Hall of Fame to honor leaders in the agricultural industry who exemplify high standards of achievement and commitment to the community. This is the second year outstanding farm families have been inducted into the Hall.
Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Robert L. Walker introduced each family to the governor, who then made the formal induction.
Bill Overholt, his wife Pearl and their sons Lloyd and Howard run a vegetable and Holstein dairy operation. They were honored for their long history of utilizing sound water and conservation practices.
"The Overholts' largest contribution to agriculture is their leadership ability for the betterment of Maryland farming. Their commitment to the community is outstanding," Walker said.
Harold Walter, his wife Helen Marie and their son Steve operate a thriving tobacco and vegetable farm which is noted to be a model in the state. The entire family serves on numerous agricultural committees and commissions.
"The Walters, through their reputation as hard working, knowledgeable, caring and excellent ag producers, have gained the respect of everyone as leaders in the field of agriculture," said Walker.
The governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame is located at the headquarters building of the Maryland Department of Agriculture in Annapolis.
