TWO BNR SCIENTISTS ELECTED IEEE FELLOWS

OTTAWA, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Two scientists from Bell-Northern Research (BNR), the research and development arm of Northern Telecom (NYSE: NT), have been honored by their professional peers for outstanding contributions to the field of telecommunications. The scientists have been awarded the prestigious Fellow of the Institute by the international Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest professional association of engineers.
The coveted honor has been awarded to less than 2 percent of the IEEE's membership of 320,000 world-wide. This year, John B. "Jack" Terry, assistant vice president, broadband systems and technologies at BNR's Ottawa labs, and Paul Mermelstein, senior manager of personal communications at the company's facility in Montreal joined the elite class. The grade of Fellow recognizes unusual distinction in the engineering profession and is conferred upon a person of extraordinary qualifications and experience.
"These awards are an outstanding recognition of the innovative thinking, vision and entrepreneurship that these individuals have brought to our telecommunications development," said George C. Smyth, president, BNR. "I commend them for their valued contributions and this significant achievement."
Terry, who lives near Carp, Ontario, received the award for his technical leadership, innovation and vision in the pioneering advancement of digital switching line circuit technology and systems crucial to the success of Northern Telecom's Digital World strategy.
Mermelstein, a resident of Montreal, Quebec, received the honor for his outstanding 30-year contribution and industry-university leadership in the field of speech coding and speech recognition. His work has helped BNR play a leading role in the world's fast-growing market for telecommunications products that use speech recognition technology.
This year, the IEEE reviewed close to 500 nominations from around the world for the grade of Fellow, approximately half of which were recommended to the IEEE's Board of Directors.
The IEEE is a professional engineering body present in some 150 countries. The Institute is the leading authority in such fields as aerospace, computers and telecommunications, biomedical technology, electric power and consumer electronics.
Bell-Northern Research is a world leader in the design and development of advanced telecommunications systems. BNR operates and supports laboratories in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia.
