A selection of your comments left on our website, Twitter and Facebook pages BREWERS say the Chancellor's decision to cut beer duty for the first time in more than 60 years will help protect hardpressed North East pubs. You have been discussing the drop in the price of a pint MJJ1970 said: "I fail to see how a 1p per pint saving will make any difference at all. If the average cost of a pint is PS1.50 you'd need to drink 150 pints to have saved enough to afford another pint (at the older price). At a consumption rate of 10 pints a day it would take a drinker 15 days to earn their 'free' pint. I wouldn't be too excited if I were a publican, particularly as the duty on wine and spirits have gone up 10p and 38p per bottle respectively. If I'm missing something blindingly obvious and any publicans want to explain to me how it will be of great benefit, then please do so."

Milk Thecow Newcastle joked: "Buy 300 pints, get one free."

Nathan Carr suggested: "Think they should give the small independent breweries and pubs a tax break before we lose them forever! Hit the supermarkets and chains hard by all means, but let's keep a little bit of individuality!" Sean Stephenson added: "Yeah - that 1p off a pint will help no end."

Alan Simpson said: "A penny off a pint won't save pubs. Even someone drinking a staggering 50 pints a week saves a mere 50p. The Government must think we're idiots. Get housebuilding going. Cut VAT to 10% for a year and give a boost to the high street. Stop bragging about high-speed rail improvements that are 20 years into the future, or fast broadband connections. People want homes to live in, not Angry Birds games."

John Phipps commented: "Ooh, a penny off a pint. That will save me all of a PS1 a year if I'm lucky. But it's OK they will get that back by thousands with bedroom taxes, council taxes and rent payments now. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask. Robin Hood robbed the rich to give to the poor. Cameron is doing the complete opposite. They screw up and we pay for it. Our Government is a joke."

@CobraCastle tweeted: "It's 1p or less, depending upon strength. So unless the whole NE exists on beer alone, they will not save them."

Trev Hagl said: "Quite possibly the only good thing the Tories have ever done. Although 1p off a pint doesn't exactly combat previous rises, nor make up for the hundreds of thousands who have lost their jobs, had their benefits stopped, had to pay 18% gas rises, etc."

Sherry Sinclair commented: "Nice if you can afford to go to the pub." Dodge Intheshed said: "Can't wait for my PS2.49 pint. I'm all excited.

Leslie Watson wondered: "Just how on earth will I spend my 2p weekly savings?"
