TWA TO SELL TWO LONDON ROUTES TO USAIR; TWA TO LEASE THREE B-767'S
MT. KISCO, N.Y., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Trans World Airlines, Inc. (TWA) today announced that it had agreed to sell to USAir, Inc. its Philadelphia/London and Baltimore/London routes for $50 million. TWA had previously proposed to include those two routes in the sale of its London routes to American Airlines. However, the Department of Transportation, in approving the sale to American of three out of its six routes to London, provided that TWA would retain its three other routes -- the two being sold to USAir and St. Louis/London. TWA will continue to operate its St. Louis/London route.
A TWA spokesman stated, "The two London routes have been operating at a substantial loss and we believe that the equipment used on those routes and the proceeds of this sale can be used much more effectively as part of our new strategy to build a domestic hub at JFK International Airport."
In this regard, TWA also announced that today it successfully completed negotiations to lease three B-767's and is negotiating for the acquisition or lease of additional aircraft. The spokesman further stated, "These 767's and the additional aircraft which we are attempting to obtain will be attractive and cost-effective additions to our transatlantic service and as part of the new JFK hub operation."
The transaction with USAir is subject to the satisfaction of various closing conditions including obtaining certain regulatory approvals.
