TWA'S SHORT-TERM AIRCRAFT LEASES CUT OPERATING COSTS; BOLSTER JFK HUB SERVICE TO MIDWEST AND TEXAS

 TWA'S SHORT-TERM AIRCRAFT LEASES CUT OPERATING COSTS;
 BOLSTER JFK HUB SERVICE TO MIDWEST AND TEXAS
 MT. KISCO, N.Y., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In an innovative move to facilitate expansion at lower costs, Trans World Airlines, Inc. (TWA), has concluded an agreement in principle to acquire four additional MD-80 aircraft on a short-term (five-month) lease.
 "We are leasing these aircraft on a short-term basis," Carl Icahn, chairman and CEO, said today, "because the airline business is seasonal and this arrangement permits us to increase service during the peak summer months without risk of having excess capacity during the off season in a weak economy."
 These airplanes will be used to expand non-stop service from TWA's JFK hub to Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston and Minneapolis. A total of nine new non-stops are being offered on June 1 -- including two new flights to Dallas.
 Special introduction fares and double Frequent Flight Bonus Mileage will be offered in these markets from June 1 through June 21.
 The no-advance-purchase one-way fares are: $159/Dallas, $129/Minneapolis, $99/Cleveland, $99/Detroit, $99/Cincinnati, $159/Houston and $79/Columbus. TWA is also offering introductory round trip fares requiring a Saturday night stay-over of $258/Dallas, $198/Minneapolis, $138/Cleveland, $138/Detroit, $138/Cincinnati, $258/Houston and $138/Columbus.
 "The traffic at our new JFK hub exceeds our expectations and flies in the face of sluggish industry trends," said Icahn. "Clearly the traveling public -- both business and leisure -- is casting its vote of confidence in TWA's policy of offering an air travel alternative at reasonable prices. We are responding by taking all steps necessary to meet the ever-growing demand at JFK."
