TVN AND SHOWTIME SIGN DEAL TO SERVE SATELLITE INDUSTRY; COMBINED OFFERINGS WILL CREATE 38-CHANNEL PACKAGE FOR HOME DISH MARKET

BURBANK, Calif., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- TVN Entertainment Corporation announced today its agreement with Showtime Satellite Networks Inc. to provide TVN's 11-channel, pay-per-view (PPV) programming service to new annual prepaid subscribers to Showtime, The Movie Channel, and the 25-channel Ultraview package or the 17-channel Extraview package. "Beginning May 1, 1993, Showtime will include TVN Satellite Theaters with every new Ultraview or Extraview annual programming package sold," said TVN's president, Stuart Z. Levin, "and TVN will market and promote subscriptions to this package to its home satellite dish customers. With the leading pay-per-view movie service and the already popular Ultraview and Extraview package, satellite dish owners now have the best choice available."
TVN Satellite Theaters is the first satellite delivered multi- channel PPV network, offering the utmost in convenience and choice with ten channels of PPV movies, and a free unscrambled Preview Channel available to the country's estimated 3.8 million home satellite dish (HSD3) owners. TVN features newly released, top grossing PPV movies from Hollywood's major studios, in a "continuous hits" format (one movie playing continuously on each channel 24 hours a day), in effect, turning each customer's home into a ten-plex movie theater.
TVN has quickly established itself as the most successful PPV programmer in the satellite dish industry. TVN also offers its viewers major sports events, such as championship boxing, wrestling and college football, and other PPV special events such as live rock concerts.
Commenting on this new relationship with TVN, Susan Denison, Showtime Satellite Network's executive vice president and general manager, said: "TVN is a perfect complement to the outstanding programming mix that our Ultraview and Extraview subscribers already receive. We've always stressed the entertainment value of our packages and now dish owners can be introduced to TVN's multi-channel pay-per- view service at no extra charge!"
Showtime, The Movie Channel and Ultraview will retail for $314.88 (less than 86 cents a day) for a prepaid annual subscription. At no additional charge, new subscribers will also receive the TVN Bonus Pak worth $32.93. It consists of a free TVN sign-up (a $19.95 value), two free TVN movies (a $7.98 value) and a $5.00 discount on a TVN Special Event. For the first time ever, the ability to order pay-per-view movies and special events from TVN will be included free with every new annual prepaid subscription to the Ultraview package, and beginning soon, with yearly renewals as well.
TVN Satellite Theater's 11-channel pay-per-view network is transmitted from 11 transponders on AT&T's Telstar 303 satellite. AT&T's marketing manager for SKYNET Transponder Services, Ted Corus, said, "We've enjoyed a long-standing relationship as the space segment provider for TVN, and we look forward to providing continued service to TVN for its new agreement with Showtime."
Showtime and TVN have agreed that each will advertise and promote this new satellite television programming offer, with the kick-off of nationwide multi-media marketing campaigns to begin May 1, 1993. As part of its national campaign, TVN will promote Showtime, The Movie Channel, Ultraview and Extraview with the TVN programming package to all 3.8 million satellite dish owners from TVN's unscrambled Preview Channel on Telstar 303 transponder 24 (T3-24), and will take orders and place them with Showtime Satellite Networks.
"We're delighted to break new ground with Showtime Satellite Networks, which is the most successful and aggressive seller of combined basic/premium programming packages to the HSD market," said Levin, "and TVN will also expand its existing subscriber base, since every new Ultraview and Extraview annual subscriber can order the hit pay-per-view movies directly from TVN. This will benefit both companies and enable TVN and Showtime to continue leading the satellite industry in sales of pay-per-view and subscription package programming, respectively."
