TVB INTERNATIONAL LTD. LAUNCHES FIRST DIGITAL COMPRESSED TV PROGRAM DELIVERY SERVICE IN ASIA-PACIFIC WITH GI'S DIGICIPHER SYSTEM

 CHICAGO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) today announced that, on Sept. 28, 1993, Television Broadcasts Limited, through its international distribution arm TVB International Ltd., began transmission of a new television program delivery service, via satellite, to Taiwan. The new Mandarin-language service, known as TVBS, is using General Instrument's DigiCipher(R) digital compressed video and access control system. This represents the first application of digital compressed TV technology in the Asia Pacific Region.
 Television Broadcasts Limited, the dominant terrestrial television programmer in Hong Kong, and the largest Chinese language programming producer in the world, began transmissions over the Palapa satellite.
 General Instrument Corporation is a world leader in broadband transmission, distribution and access control technologies for cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasting applications, as well as in discrete power rectifying components. GI has joined with the other all-digital proponents for the U.S. HDTV standard in a "Grand Alliance" that will share technology and potential future royalties.
