TVA BOARD DENIES CHIP MILL REQUESTS

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The TVA Board today denied all three requests for barge terminal permits associated with chip mills proposed for a 12 mile stretch of the Tennessee River southwest of Chattanooga.
The Board acted on a recommendation from TVA's Resource Group, which conducted a comprehensive study of the potential environmental impacts of the mills over the past two years. TVA conducted numerous public meetings to gather information and opinions and received thousands of written comments.
The recommendation was based on the study, which found that although there are potential benefits associated with the mills, there is a likelihood of cumulative, negative impacts locally and risks of significant environmental impacts from timber harvesting.
"This decision was not reached easily," said TVA Chairman John Waters. "TVA's staff worked very hard, conducted a thorough review and listened to all points of view. We believe the decision is in the best interest of Tennessee Valley residents."
The board's action does not prohibit construction of chip mills, but it prevents construction of proposed new barge terminals needed to ship the wood chips on the river.
Parker Towing Company, Donghae Pulp Company of Alabama and Boise Cascade Corporation sought TVA permits to locate barge terminals on the Tennessee River near South Pittsburgh, Tenn., and Bridgeport, Ala.
