TV movies: adaptable, abundant, attractive.

With some 10 TV outlets that present large quantities of TV movies, the U.S. is the most fertile source for what are commonly referred as Movies of the Week (MOWs).

There are approximately 20 U.S. companies that are prolific in creating this genre of program. It is estimated that America consumes over 400 original MOWs per year.

Subjects for MOWs span the gamut -- From the so-called "disease of the week" to up-to-the-minute news events and socially relevant themes (i.e. WB's A Story of Interracial Love). While filming of W[N's Assault on Waco was in progress, the actual event was yet to unfold to its tragic end. in the case of the "Long Island Lolita," who shot and wounded her alleged lover's wife, three different MOW versions were produced, one for each major network.

Even though international broadcasters attend the Los Angeles Screenings to preview new series, some keep a keen eye on MOWs. "TV movies offer flexibility," RAI-2 boss Giampaolo Sodano recently commented: "With the scarse availability of theatrical movies, TV movies are desirable." "This is today's most requested format, and will also be for tomorrow," Sodano predicted.

MOWs are produced with budgets ranging from $2.5 million to $3.2 million, with the higher end also offering a different international distribution pattern. If the MOW proves to be an excellent one, international theatrical distribution and pay-TV are first contemplated, followed by a home video release, before being available for television.

Contrary to independent theatrical productions, MOWs are only produced with a network commitment. The ensuing deficit between production costs and network fee is recouped in the international market.

Below, we list a number of MOWs for the new season from U.S. and international distributors.
