TV TIMES PAST.

Dempsey And Makepeace ITV, 1985-1986 TWO words - Glynis Barber. Okay, so there were other people in it too, along with plots and explosions and stuff, but - let's face it - there was only one real reason your dad started staying in on Saturday nights during the mid-'80s.

A shameless attempt at flogging a homegrown detective drama to the American networks, it co-starred rugged Yank actor Michael Brandon as the NewYork cop mismatched with Barber's aloof English detective as they patrolled the less than mean streets of London - which were largely shot to look like an ad for overseas tourism.

The "will they, won't they?" flirtatiousness of the lead couple was also more suited to a freeze-dried coffee commercial than a serious attempt at reinventing The Avengers and, as a result, it only lasted three series.
