TV SPOTLIGHT ON EON STAR TONY; Former market trader showcases Chinese links.

Byline: By NEIL HODGSON Industry Reporter

A FORMER Liverpool ECHO Young Business Person of the Year is starring in a TV special on British entrepreneurs in China.

Tony Caldeira will feature in the hour-long C4 production showing three businesses bidding to break into China's "dragon economy" which is poised to overtake the US and Europe.

The "observational documentary" is expected to be screened in spring and is tipped to be one of the most important films of its type in 2007.

Mr Caldeira, who won the ECHO accolade in 2004, has built up the family textiles firm from a Great Homer Street market stall in 1991 to a pounds 9m turnover operation employing 250 staff between its Knowsley factory and its new plant in Hangzou, about two hours drive from Shanghai, a pounds 1.6m joint venture which officially opens on February 28.

Caldeira's managing director has been shadowed by a C4 film crew for six months to illustrate the reality of doing business in China's rapidly evolving market, such as globalisation's implications for UK business, intellectual property theft and the modern 'industrial revolution' unfolding in the world's most populous nation.

Alastair Cook of film makers Double Act Productions said: "For Tony it was China or bust. The fact that he has invested more than Elm of his own money in a factory built in a Chinese paddy field is amazing.

"The scenes shot in Liverpool are very strong and will make great television, especially when he goes back to his roots at Great Homer Street market."

Mr Caldeira said: "Some of the scenes are very funny and I think that the show will be both entertaining and interesting.

"It will be a great showcase for the company, its work in China and the business scene in Liverpool."

The TV crew will be filming Mr Caldeira's keynote speech at the North West Chinese New Year dinner in Liverpool on February 15.
