TV Ontario: selling in spite of everything.

"When TV Ontario was formed the thought of selling our programs outside of the province of Ontario was unheard of," said Cindy Galbraith, marketing, planning and support manager, TV Ontario. "We started to get calls from other broadcasters who were interested in our product. In spite of everything, our programs began to sell."

Its documentary, science and children's programs have won awards. Vista: The Greenhouse Effect received a Rockie award at the Banff Television Festival, a Silver Screen award at the U.S. Industrial Film and Video Festival and a main prize at Czechoslovakia's Ekofilm '88.

The biggest difference from other producers is that we have two networks. The closest that would come to us in Canada is the CBC. They produce for their network as well." Galbraith added, "As a distributor, we distribute only what we produce. Hopefully, that will change. We are going to have to become more involved with co-production."

"Our biggest partnership is with NHK in Japan. We do many co-productions with them and share rights. Sometimes they will get rights to Asia and we get rights to North America or we will get the world less Japan. Sometimes they take everything and we take Canada, but on every production, we negotiate."

"But we do not distribute everything we produce. We are very selective about what we take to market and what we take to market internationally is very different than the U.S."

TVO is the British network and La Chaine is French. Says the marketing pro, "Sometimes we'll version the English into French but the French state of mind is different so there are programs that are done specifically for the French audiences of Ontario." Projected gross revenue of 1991-92 was $4.4 million. "It was a tough year economically and we have taken fewer new products to market over the year," said Galbraith.

TV Ontario is pushing three stories. "One bad been in the marketplace about a year, but not yet officially launched, Global Family, which is to be launched at MIP. It's a nature series with 40 half hours, with 20 more in production."

"Book Mice is another program we're excited about. It's a spinoff of The Magic Library and enhances reading skills by using the three original puppets from Magic Library," said Galbraith. The third show is One Moment in Time, a one-hour documentary about the January Space Shuttle.
