TV LAND: Night of knights.

Byline: nicola methven

IT is the one night of the year when the stars take a back seat and unsung heroes take centre-stage.

Truly remarkable people will be honoured at tonight's Mirror Pride of Britain Awards by guests including Jamie Oliver and Carol Vorderman. And surprises in store include comedian Peter Kay bringing Manchester airport to a halt when he honours stewardess Carol Miller, who delivered a seriously premature baby, weighing just 1lb 1oz, at 30,000ft.

The Phoenix Nights star has travellers in stitches as he surprises Carol at work. And in a rare public appearance, Harry Potter author JKRowling is given a special award for her services to literacy around the world.

But the night belongs to the ordinary people and their extraordinary stories will bring a tear to your eye.
