TV GUIDE AND LIBERTY MEDIA TO LAUNCH
 INTERACTIVE ELECTRONIC PROGRAM GUIDE
DENVER, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- TV Guide and Liberty Media, through its affiliates X-PRESS Information Services Ltd. and Star Net Inc., a member of The Lenfest Group, have entered into an agreement to jointly develop, test and market an interactive electronic television program guide to be delivered via cable systems, it was announced today by Joseph W. Cece, president and publisher of TV Guide, and by Peter Barton, president of Liberty Media.
"This joint venture is a unique and powerful marriage of TV Guide's program information data and Liberty Media's and Star Net's distribution technologies which will bring to fruition the on-screen program guide designed to serve viewers and programmers well into the next millennium," said Cece. "I'm very happy that in Liberty Media and Star Net we've found partners with the resources and skills to make electronic TV Guide a reality."
Barton added, "In designing a guide product for the cable industry, we felt the system needed to provide MSOs with maximum control by using a methodology that utilizes parts of the cable spectrum that are easily managed by cable headends -- as opposed to trying to make our feed fit the inherent inadequacies of the VBI. This partnership fully intends to deliver the premier product which we believe will become the industry standard."
TV Guide will be primarily responsible for developing and supplying the data and editorial. This is the magazine's first effort at electronically delivering program listings to households. X-PRESS and Star Net will be responsible for the cable distribution of the electronic program guide and will coordinate the technical support for both consumer applications and cable headend processing.
X-PRESS President Jerry Bennington commented that, "This service will respond to the needs of both the consumer and the cable industry. We expect to offer everything from interactive cable specific listings to advanced digital features. With the advent of 150-channel systems and increased pay-per-view options, an on-screen TV Guide, coupled with remote control's ease of access, will become an essential part of America's living rooms."
As America's largest weekly publication with a circulation of 14 million, TV Guide is currently the largest provider of TV listings in the country, producing 113 editions including eight cable-specific editions. X-PRESSS presently offers digitized news and information services through an out-of-band cable signal to personal computer users in over 800 cable systems representing 30 million households across the country. Star Net currently offers a cross channel promotion service which is carried by cable systems serving over 22 million subscribing homes.
