THE RESTORATION MAN Channel 4, 9pm Architect George Clarke has his work cut out this week, as he follows the fortunes of Vanessa Ford Robbins and her partner Nik Huddy, who are undertaking a project to transform a Victorian gate lodge located on the boundaries of a country estate in Surrey. When Vanessa, a theatre director with an eye for a dramatic location, first laid eyes on the place it was love at first sight, but as they try to restore a bit of life to this fairy-tale building, the problems begin to mount. It has been derelict for almost half a century, and doesn't have the kind of living space they require - but they find getting planning permission to extend a Grade II listed building is not as easy as they had first imagined. To make matters worse, they elect to undertake the building work themselves, and are living on-site in a caravan. That's no mean feat in itself, as winter begins to set in. Fortunately, George is on-hand to guide them through their many pitfalls.
TROUBLE ABROAD ITV1, 9pm We've all done it; sat at our desks harassed by a boring nine to five, and dared to dream of starting over elsewhere. Some people, though, have actually had the bottle to go through with it, but sadly, far from the grass being greener, their upping sticks has caused them no end of problems. This programme hears from a handful of the 5.5million Brits who have left the UK in search of a better life. Sally Spencer is one such person. Her husband lost his fortune through internet gambling.
