TV ANSWER, SEQUOIA SYSTEMS SIGN $8.5 MILLION CONTRACT
TO CREATE TV ANSWER'S NATIONAL SWITCHING CENTER
RESTON, Va., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- TV Answer, Inc., and Sequoia Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SEQS), today announced that a Sequoia Series 400 fault-tolerant system will be the main computer system at the center of the first national interactive, or two-way, U.S. television system. The contract to install the Series 400 computer in TV Answer's National Switching Center is valued at $2.4 million for hardware, operating system software, systems maintenance and services. Service fees and component add-ons could equal as much as $8.5 million over the life of the five-year contract.
Using TV Answer, consumers will be able to turn their televisions from one-way information and entertainment vehicles into two-way communications tools. They will be able to interact with their TV for activities like playing along with game shows and sports events, responding to news polls and interactive commercials and participating in educational programming. Consumers will also be able to use their televisions to perform services like banking, bill paying, shopping and organizing their TV programming information.
TV Answer will use the Series 400 to register consumer transactions as they pass through the TV Answer System. The Switching Center will record pertinent data about the transaction such as its length, point-of-origin and destination. But it will not capture consumer identification data for any purpose other than tracing transactions. To assure maximum security and privacy for consumers, TV Answer has purchased the Series 400 standard UNIX operating system with Secure TOPIX. Secure TOPIX has C2 and B1 level security, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense as a highly secure computer security system. "TV Answer is pioneering an entirely new industry that demands powerful, nonproprietary, continuously available computer systems that can easily expand to handle potentially massive market growth," said Gary Hoffman, Sequoia's vice president of sales. "Sequoia is the only systems provider that can meet these technical requirements and provide the highest level of support that applications such as TV Answer's groundbreaking service need."
TV Answer is committed to placing 1.5 million consumer units in the market in the first year of service. TV Answer projects that it will place 20 million consumer units within the first five years. The initial consumer units are expected to be available in the nation's major television markets no later than the first quarter of 1993. The units will be manufactured and marketed nationally by the Hewlett-Packard Company.
Sequoia's Series 400 is designed to handle the initial year's projected peak loads, said Bob Chiaramonte, TV Answer vice president of information systems, and can be easily expanded to handle projected peak loads through the fifth year. Chiaramonte estimates that by the fifth year, the Series 400 will be able to receive and process up to 20 million transactions within 13 minutes. In the process, the Series 400 will receive the transaction, decrypt the security code and information, record the transaction, encrypt it with a new security code and determine where it will be transmitted.
