TV: Romance in the tomes.

WHAT'S the best way to win the heart of your Valentine? Well, according to Daisy Goodwin, forget big cards and candlelit dinners and try some verse instead.

The presenter says: ``There is something about the rhythm of poetry, the way the words glisten and slidetogether, which makes it the perfect vehicle for seduction.''

The first episode of Essential Poems perfectly proves her point as a variety of actors offer their interpretations of some of the most romantic verses ever written. Daisy, who selected the poems used in the series, feels that anyone who doesn't already believe in the romantic power of poetry could well be converted by this episode. ``Poetry is probably at its most valuable when we fall in love. In Essential Poems, anyone will agree with me that poetry is much underrated as an erotic medium.''

She adds: ``A poem's not just for Valentine's Day - it's for life!''
