WEAKEST Link inquisitor Anne Robinson is "a nasty unchristian torturer who delights in making people squirm", a Church newspaper has said.

Robinson is part of the latest craze in TV entertainment that consists of humiliating the weak, the Church of Ireland Gazette said.

In an article penned by Canon Cecil Cooper, Robinson is taken to task for "promoting an unchristian attitude".

He told his 368,000 readers in Ireland: "Nastiness and psychological cruelty are now apparently OK, even 'cool'.

"Magnus Magnusson used to say 'I've started, so I'll finish', but in the new gameshow culture he would be required to say, 'The buzzer has gone, I will not finish the question'."

The concerned cleric went on to say that the producers of such shows are particularly pleased when contestants get vital, prize-winning questions wrong.

But blatant money-grabbing wasn't deemed unchristian by the Canon.

He said: "On Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Chris Tarrant really seems to want contestants to win and is very sympathetic.

"I only hope shows like The Weakest Link soon disappear from our screens."

STRICT: Anne Robinson
