TURNER ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF NWNL

 MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of The NWNL Companies (NYSE: NWN) has elected President and Chief Executive Officer John G. Turner to the additional position of chairman.
 NWNL's previous chairman, John E. Pearson, retired on Jan. 31, 1992.
 Turner, 54, joined Northwestern National Life as an assistant actuary in 1967 and served in a wide variety of actuarial and group insurance management positions. In 1981 he became executive vice president and chief actuary of the company, and he was named senior executive vice president the following year.
 Turner was elected president and a director of the company in 1983, and he added the title of chief operating officer in 1986. On July 1, 1991, he was named chief executive officer in addition to his title of president as a step toward an orderly management transition preceding Pearson's retirement. He has also been chairman of North Atlantic Life and Northern Life since 1991.
 Turner brings strong academic credentials and three decades of professional experience to his new position. He began his insurance career following his graduation from Amherst College in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and has played a key role in NWNL's operations since 1967. He received his Fellow, Society of Actuaries designation that same year. He also graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
 During his career at NWNL, he has had responsibility for the direction and development of individual insurance, group insurance, life and health reinsurance, the company's medical department, and North Atlantic Life. He has also overseen the enterprise quality process since 1988.
 Reporting to Turner is John H. Flittie, senior executive vice president and chief operating officer, who heads the company's business operations. Other areas reporting directly to Turner are Washington Square Capital Inc., Corporate Communications, Human Resources Services, and the Financial and Law Divisions.
 Turner has been involved in many industry, business and civic activities. Positions of service he has held include:
