TURKEY TURNS AWAY FROM TEXAS' DOOR
The ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party executives announced that new arms bill which has drawn reactions of the public would not be debated in this legislative year. Hurriyet daily newspaper headlined the bill as, "Texas law on the way".
Last week, the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Arms adopted the bill which made disputable amendments on license and arms acquisition. The bill dropped the age to own guns and rifles to 18, whereas a person could have five weapons if s/he wanted. The bill also said a person could carry two guns at one time.
Suat Kilic and Mustafa Elitas, the deputy chairmen of AK Party group at parliament, told Hurriyet that it was not possible for the parliament to discuss the bill in this legislative year due to its busy agenda. In this case, the bill will be caducous.
SNOWBALL ON POLICE OFFICERS
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended a meeting at the TUBITAK Space Technologies Research Institute on the campus of the Middle East Technical University (METU) on Wednesday. Students staged a protest in front of the institute building. A group of students wanted to march to the TUBITAK building as some of their friends were detained. Police used tear gas and pepper spray to intervene in the group. Students responded by throwing snowballs.

NEW NAMES IN KILICDAROGLU'S PARTY ASSEMBLY
New names, who will be included in party assembly of main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), are getting clear two days before the congress. Party's Chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu will include sight-disabled lawyer Turan Icli, Assyrian Markus Urek, retired diplomats Ugur Ziyal and Faruk Logoglu as well as some technocrats in the party assembly list. Also, there will be 30 women members in the party assembly list.
SAMSUN-CEYHAN PIPELINE IS THE INSURANCE OF STRAITS
Russian Deputy Premier Igor Sechin said Russia was ready to do its part for the Samasun-Ceyhan pipeline. Sechin, who held a joint press conference with Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz, said, "Samsun-Ceyhan pipeline will provide great safety for the Black Sea and the straits in terms of environment. Akkuyu will be the World's safest reactor. Russia will provide all the guarantee for the financing of the power plant.
The lawsuit against 196 suspects including 60 retired and serving generals who are charged to attend the Balyoz coup seminar in 2003 and attempt to overthrow the Justice and Development (AK) Party government, will begin today. The case whose number one suspect is Former First Army Commander Ret. Gen. Cetin Dogan will be heard in Silivri.
